Global Cybersecurity Treaties Gain Support

Momentum is building for international agreements on cybersecurity, as cross-border attacks increase in frequency and sophistication. The United Nations has been facilitating talks on a potential global cybersecurity treaty, while regional blocs such as the EU and ASEAN are advancing their own cooperative frameworks.

Proponents argue that just as arms treaties helped stabilize international relations in the past, cybersecurity agreements could reduce risks of digital warfare. Shared protocols could also improve incident reporting, forensics cooperation, and standards for protecting critical infrastructure.

Skeptics, however, highlight the difficulty of enforcing treaties in cyberspace and the likelihood of major powers resisting binding commitments. Even so, the growing dialogue reflects recognition that no single nation can address cyber threats alone.
